RING: Prospect ID - Tips & Tricks

A session to describe methods for major gift prospect identification strategies. MIT has a dedicated, full time Prospect Identification team. Two members will describe their efforts and processes. Their efforts have doubled the number of confirmed, connected major gift prospects for MIT over the past six years.

 

Strategies discussed will include the benefits of full time approach and methods used, including vendor screenings, "wealth event" monitoring, resources used, and some "tips & tricks" of things to looks for when looking for new major gift prospects.

Hugh Bennett

Hugh Bennett is associate director for prospect identification in the office of development services at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has worked since 2005. He works actively with screening methodologies to identify new major gift prospects and to quantify wealth factors. Bennett's prior experience includes working as a volunteer fund raiser for three different secondary schools and working for over twenty years in the investment banking industry. He worked on financings, mergers/acquisitions, and business valuations and specialized in the technology, telecom, biotech, and plastic manufacturing industries. He worked for The First Boston Corporation (now part of Credit Suisse), Advest (now part of Merrill Lynch/BofA), McKinley Allsopp, and Gagan, Bennett & Co. Bennett has previously served on the boards of trustees/directors of non-profits and corporations, both privately owned and publicly traded. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina.

 

Joel Rodgers

Joel Rodgers is a senior research analyst focused on prospect identification in the office of development services at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has worked since 2007 identifying new major gift prospects worldwide. Previously, Rodgers spent seven years with the MIT Annual Fund in the Alumni Association. He has also worked as a freelance graphic & digital designer and photographer in the music industry in New York State. Rodgers began his career as an Instructor at the Millersville University of Pennsylvania and currently serves as an active volunteer and fund raiser with his alma maters. A native of Lancaster County, PA, he holds degrees from both the Paul Smith's College of Arts & Sciences and the Millersville University of Pennsylvania.
