PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

As Prospect Development professionals, we’re familiar with Gift Acceptance Policies: but how often do we assess whether we should accept and/or continue a relationship with a donor whose behavior or ideology may be more problematic than their source of wealth? At the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, we found that even the most infrequent inappropriate donor behavior affects our donor-facing colleagues negatively, especially with no formal reporting system in place to protect them when it occurred. With our commitment to Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging in mind, the Prospect Management team drew from the wisdom of Gift Acceptance/Due Diligence best practices, the values and staff policies of our organization, and the needs and experience of Gift Officers and other donor-facing staff, to craft a process for capturing and addressing instances of problematic donor behavior and mitigating the negative effects on our team. Think of it as a Relationship Acceptance Policy; it functions to ensure a safe and equitable way for incidents to be captured in our CRM, with the intention that these relationships be evaluated wholly with the well-being of our staff and our organization in mind. This case study presentation will walk you through the steps we've taken to create our policy, how we engaged key stakeholders to ensure collaboration and buy-in, what resources we used, and what questions we tried to answer with our policy. We’ll also offer insights from our donor-facing colleagues about the value of the policy and their experience of its development, as well as time for Q&A with the Prospect Management team. Join us for a walk-through of our development process, aimed specifically at helping you jumpstart your own Values Misalignment Relationship Management Policy.
