The Shadow of Wealth: How Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals and Wealth Managers Protect Their Wealth Through Hidden Assets

It's almost a riddle: how are we supposed to find “invisible" wealth and assets? As ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals utilize wealth management professionals to obscure ownership and avoid tax obligations, locating wealth assets becomes more and more difficult for prospect researchers. In addition to outlining the entities used by wealth managers (corporations, foundations, trusts, and freeports) to preserve the wealth of their UHNW clients, Kristina and Mary will share the narratives and notes they have used in their work to explain the possibility of hidden wealth assets in research profiles and reports. The presentation will be primarily informed by Brooke Harrington’s Capital without Borders: Wealth Managers and the One Percent and Jake Bernstein's Secrecy World.

Coffee will be served. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to get breakfast prior to the presentation, as the University of New England’s catering contract does not allow outside food and beverages. There are coffee shops on campus and in the vicinity. After the presentation, please join your fellow attendees for lunch in Alexander Hall. Lunch costs typically range from $10-$15.

PRESENTERS:

Kristina Gropper lives in Forest Hills, New York. She joined the Helen Brown Group as a Research Associate in March 2017. Before joining HBG, she was the Research Manager at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and an Associate Manager of Prospect Research at City Harvest, a food rescue organization. Kristina started her non-profit career as a legal assistant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004. She is a member of Apra and Apra Greater New York. She was Apra Greater New York’s Director of Programming from June 2014 to May 2016. Kristina graduated from The University of Chicago and the Bard Graduate Center.

Mary Taddia previously worked in prospect research at The University of New England for over 10 years, most recently serving as prospect research manager. She has been a Research Associate with the Helen Brown Group since September 2016 and has nearly 20 years of experience working in various non-profit organizations. She currently serves on NEDRA’s Scholarship and Conference committees and is a former NEDRA board member. She resides in the beautiful city of Portland, Maine.
