The Shadow of Wealth: How Ultra-High-Net-Worth Individuals and Wealth Managers Protect Their Wealth Through Hidden Assets

Friday, March 1, 2019

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

University of New England

716 Stevens Avenue

21 Blewett Hall

Portland, ME 04102

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

It's almost a riddle: how are we supposed to find “invisible" wealth and assets? As ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals utilize wealth management professionals to obscure ownership and avoid tax obligations, locating wealth assets becomes more and more difficult for prospect researchers. In addition to outlining the entities used by wealth managers (corporations, foundations, trusts, and freeports) to preserve the wealth of their UHNW clients, Kristina and Mary will share the narratives and notes they have used in their work to explain the possibility of hidden wealth assets in research profiles and reports. The presentation will be primarily informed by Brooke Harrington’s Capital without Borders: Wealth Managers and the One Percent and Jake Bernstein's Secrecy World.

Coffee will be served. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to get breakfast prior to the presentation, as the University of New England’s catering contract does not allow outside food and beverages. There are coffee shops on campus and in the vicinity. After the presentation, please join your fellow attendees for lunch in Alexander Hall. Lunch costs typically range from $10-$15.

PARKING AND CAMPUS MAP:

It is not recommended that attendees park on campus. UNE’s satellite parking lot, where most of the staff parks, is on Bishop Street (on Google Maps, look for “UNE Bishop Street Parking Lot”). There’s a shuttle from the lot to campus every 7 minutes or so. To get from the on-campus drop-off point to Blewett Hall is a 3-minute walk, toward the art gallery (a tiny cube building surrounded by sculptures) and around behind Proctor Hall to Blewett.

Blewett Hall is #7 on the campus map
